This is a tricky question, because it depends on your state and which version of the International Building Code they are enforcing. Add to this the fact that many local municipalities have their own requirements for stairwell signage, and things can get confusing. The bottom line is to always check with your state and local building inspectors and Fire Marshal to assure your stairwell signs are compliant. That being said, when you combine NFPA and IFC/IBC guidelines, common stairwell signage will have the characteristics pictured above. Besides standard stairwell Identification sign (A.1 and A.2) additional stairwell signage will likely be required:
1. A Floor Level Sign (Sign C above) meeting ADA sign requirements with tactile letters and braille installed inside the stairwell and located at each floor level landing next to the door leading from the stairwell into the corridor.
2. If there is an exit door from the stairwell leading to the exterior or to the level of discharge exit for the building, there should be an ADA compliant "EXIT" sign (Sign B) w/raised characters & braille installed adjacent to the door. Doors leading to exit doors should be identified as "EXIT ROUTE."
3. Corridor or hallway doors leading INTO stairwells require ADA tactile & braille signs (Sign D) designating "STAIRS" or the stairwell ID (i.e.-STAIR B)
